Speaker welcomes Senate decision to deliberate on RBH 6

admin January 31, 2024

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Wednesday expressed his appreciation for the Senate’s decision to initiate hearings on Resolution of Both Houses No. 6 (RBH 6) starting next week, considering it a “significant step towards the much-awaited constitutional amendments.”

In his statement, Romualdez said he eagerly anticipates the outcomes of the Senate deliberations, recognizing the profound impact potential amendments can have on the 1987 Constitution.

Introduced by Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, RBH 6 aims for constitutional reforms in Article 12, 14, and 16, addressing restrictions on foreign ownership in public utilities, educational institutions, and the advertising industry.

“The move to ease certain restrictive provisions is seen not merely as a legislative exercise but as a crucial step in realizing the aspirations of the Filipino people and unlocking the nation’s full potential,” Romualdez pointed out.

The leader of the 300-plus-strong House of Representatives welcomed the development, emphasizing the united front presented by Zubiri.

He said the collaborative effort between the House and the Senate signals a commitment to address vital changes that could shape the country’s future.

“As the Senate embarks on this momentous task, the House of Representatives stands ready to collaborate and contribute to this significant legislative endeavor. We share a common goal – to ensure that any amendments to our Constitution serve the best interests of the Filipino people and lay a strong foundation for a more prosperous and equitable Philippines,” Romualdez said.

He assured senators of the House’s support and readiness to take prompt action and approval on the amendments proposed by the Senate.

“Asahan po ng ating mga Senador na kasama nila ang House of Representatives sa misyong ito. Handa kami na umaksyon at aprubahan sa Kamara ang mga pagbabagong ipapasok ng Senado sa ating Konstitusyon. Matagal na namin itong hinihintay,” he said.

The House chief commended Zubiri for “his leadership in taking this bold step forward and look forward to the insightful outcomes of the Senate’s deliberations.”

“Together, we are writing a new chapter in our nation’s history, one that holds the promise of transformative change and enduring progress,” he added.

The Speaker issued the statement following Zubiri’s announcement that the Senate will initiate deliberations on RBH 6 next week, establishing a sub-committee led by Senator Juan Edgardo Angara to tackle the measure.
