Sandigan suspends Jinggoy Estrada for 90 days over flood control scam

admin June 16, 2026

THE Sandiganbayan has ordered the 90-day preventive suspension of Senator Jose “Jinggoy” P. Ejercito Estrada amid plunder and graft charges linked to the flood control scandal.

Issued by the anti-graft court’s Second Division on Tuesday, the ruling directs Estrada to step down from his post as senator and from any other public office he currently holds or may assume in the future. The suspension will run for ninety days starting from his receipt of the resolution and will take effect once the order becomes final and executory.

The court’s resolution stated clearly: “Accordingly, in view of the foregoing, this Court hereby orders the suspension pendente lite of accused Senator Jose ‘Jinggoy’ P. Ejercito Estrada from his present position as Senator of the Republic of the Philippines, and from any other public office that he may now or hereafter be holding for a period of ninety (90) days from receipt of this Resolution, which shall take effect upon the finality of this Resolution.” This measure is part of standard legal procedures for officials facing serious corruption charges, intended to ensure that the accused cannot use their position to influence witnesses, tamper with evidence, or interfere with the proceedings.

Estrada stands accused of plunder and graft in connection with the alleged misuse of funds intended for flood control projects, which have been the subject of public outcry and investigation over alleged irregularities and substandard infrastructure. Earlier in the proceedings, the senator refused to enter a plea, prompting the court to automatically enter a not guilty plea on his behalf. The suspension order marks a significant development in the case, underscoring the gravity of the accusations and the court’s commitment to uphold accountability regardless of the official position of those involved.
