A NEW survey from OCTA Research indicates widespread public support for a Senate trial or impeachment court proceeding against Vice President Sara Duterte.
The Tugon ng Masa (TNM) survey, released Monday, found that 78% of Filipinos believe Duterte should face a trial to address the charges against her and clear her name. Only 13% disagreed, while 9% were undecided.
OCTA stated that the findings reflect strong public support for accountability and due process. While Vice President Duterte’s defense team expressed readiness to face the charges, they maintain that the impeachment process should not be used for political harassment.
They also raised concerns about potential constitutional issues related to the impeachment complaint.
The survey, conducted from April 20th to 24th, involved 1,200 respondents aged 18 and above and has a margin of error of ±3%.
The House of Representatives impeached Duterte on February 5th, and the Articles of Impeachment were transmitted to the Senate.
While initially scheduled for June 2nd, the Senate has postponed the proceedings to June 11th to prioritize the administration’s legislative agenda. Despite this, some senators are reportedly working on a resolution to dismiss the case.
The charges against the Vice President include betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes, all of which she denies.
