IN response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s declaration of a national energy emergency, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has significantly ramped up security measures around critical energy facilities across the country.
This proactive step aims to safeguard vital infrastructure and prevent any potential disruptions or exploitation of the current situation, which has been exacerbated by rising global fuel prices and supply uncertainties.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. assured the public that their personnel are on high alert, with increased deployment in key areas such as substations, transmission lines, and power plants.
The primary objective is to ensure the continuous operation of these facilities and maintain peace and order, preventing any interference that could worsen the impact of potential power shortages. Nartatez emphasized the PNP’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence at gas stations and energy plants to guarantee that fuel supply remains uninterrupted, underscoring the critical role of these resources in national stability.
Furthermore, the PNP has activated contingency measures to ensure that police operations remain uninterrupted despite possible power interruptions. General Nartatez stated that backup power systems are in place at police stations, guaranteeing that frontline services will continue 24/7. This readiness ensures that the police force can effectively respond to any situation, regardless of energy supply fluctuations. The PNP’s commitment to service continuity highlights their dedication to public safety even amidst national challenges.
In addition to securing energy infrastructure, the PNP is also advising the public to exercise heightened vigilance, particularly during nighttime power outages. General Nartatez urged citizens to secure their homes, lock their doors, and exercise caution with unattended candles during brownouts.
The PNP will also be conducting increased night patrols in affected communities to deter any potential increase in crime during periods of darkness. This comprehensive approach reflects the government’s multi-faceted strategy to manage the energy emergency, ensuring both the security of national resources and the safety of its citizens.
