THE Presidential Communications Office (PCO) announced a new initiative to combat the spread of false information within government media outlets.
This initiative, announced on Thursday by newly appointed PCO secretary Cesar Chavez, involves the appointment of fact-check officers in various government media offices.
Chavez emphasized the government’s responsibility to disseminate “timely, accurate, and validated” information. He stated that the appointment of fact-check officers aims to prevent government media from becoming “purveyors or promoters” of false information. “We want to designate a fact-check officer so that we ourselves don’t become distributors, promoters, or instruments of fake news,” he said.
The initiative extends beyond government media offices, with Chavez inviting media outlets to collaborate in scrutinizing government projects. He noted that the appointment of fact-check officers will cover regional and provincial state media outlets, including the Philippine News Agency, Philippine Information Agency, PTV4, and IBC.
This move comes amidst growing concerns about the spread of misinformation, particularly in the context of the 2022 elections. During the campaign period, a fact-checking coalition identified President Bongbong Marcos Jr. as a major beneficiary of online fake news. He was also accused of utilizing troll farms to spread propaganda, an allegation he denied.
The PCO’s initiative is not limited to the office itself, with Chavez stressing that it is “an undertaking of the entire government bureaucracy, especially the communications team.” He also highlighted his commitment to actively communicating government policy regarding the West Philippine Sea.
Chavez replaced Cheloy Garafil, who has been assigned as the new chief of the Manila Economic Cultural Office.
The appointment of fact-check officers and the collaborative approach with media outlets represent a significant step towards addressing the issue of misinformation within the Philippine government. It remains to be seen how effective this initiative will be in combating the spread of false information and ensuring the dissemination of accurate and reliable information to the public.
