Pasig City congressional candidate disqualified for solo parents remarks

admin May 8, 2025

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) Second Division has disqualified Christian de Guzman Sia from the race for congressman in Pasig City’s lone district.

The disqualification, detailed in a May 7, 2025, resolution, stems from violations of Comelec Resolutions 11116 and 11127, as well as Section 261(e) of the Omnibus Election Code.

The Comelec Task Force on Safeguarding Against Fear & Exclusion in Elections (Task Force SAFE) initiated the disqualification petition motu proprio, citing two separate instances where Sia’s campaign rhetoric violated the commission’s anti-discrimination and fair campaigning guidelines.

The resolution states that Sia’s public remarks, particularly those targeting solo parents and a female staff member, were deemed sexually suggestive, objectifying, and degrading.

In one instance, his comments towards solo parents were considered offensive. In another, he publicly summoned a female staff member to the stage, focusing on her physical appearance and inviting comparisons between her current and past physique. The Comelec Second Division found this behavior to be in violation of the election code and the commission’s guidelines on fair campaigning.

While Sia retains the right to appeal the decision to the Comelec En Banc or the Supreme Court, the resolution stipulates that should he receive the highest number of votes, his proclamation will be suspended pending the final resolution of the case.

This decision highlights the Comelec’s commitment to upholding fair and respectful campaigning practices and underscores the consequences of violating established guidelines. The case serves as a reminder to all candidates of the importance of maintaining ethical and responsible conduct throughout the election process.
