THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has confirmed it has identified the individuals believed responsible for defacing several government websites over the weekend.
Among the platforms targeted and altered in separate incidents were the official sites of the NBI itself, the Senate of the Philippines, and the House of Representatives, prompting a coordinated probe by authorities.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag disclosed that while different persons carried out the attacks, all are members of the same group. He explained that the actions were coordinated but executed separately, leading to the intrusion and modification of content on each affected page. For now, the bureau is withholding the identities of the suspects, as investigations are still ongoing and legal teams are finalizing the evidence needed to file appropriate charges.
Matibag assured the public that no sensitive information or private records were compromised during the incidents. He emphasized that the attackers only altered visible content on the websites and did not gain access to internal databases or confidential files, minimizing the impact on government operations and public data. Measures have since been taken to restore the sites and strengthen security protocols to prevent similar breaches.
Meanwhile, Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center Director Renato Paraiso stated that those involved could face charges of computer manipulation and malicious mischief under Philippine laws. He noted that interfering with or modifying official government web platforms constitutes a serious offense, and authorities are working closely to ensure that all persons accountable are brought to justice.
