NBI identifies persons of interest in VP Sara’s alleged assassination threat

Metrosundaily July 21, 2026

NATIONAL Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag confirmed that authorities have already identified several persons of interest who could help trace the individual Vice President Sara Duterte claimed to have contacted regarding an alleged threat to harm President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

The development marks a key step forward in inquiries surrounding the vice president’s earlier public statement, where she said she had reached out to someone who could carry out retaliation should she be killed first.

Matibag noted that these identified persons of interest may hold vital details that can clarify who was spoken to, what was discussed, and whether any actual arrangement or plan was made. Investigators are set to conduct interviews and verify information from these individuals to establish the truth behind the claim and determine if there is any basis to the alleged threat against the President. The bureau emphasized that identifying possible links is essential to separate fact from speculation and ensure public safety.

The issue has drawn intense scrutiny amid the ongoing impeachment proceedings and political tensions. The NBI’s move to identify potential persons of interest aims to provide clarity and accountability, stressing that any threat against a head of state is a serious matter that must be fully investigated. Authorities assured that the probe will follow due process and rely on evidence as they work to uncover the full facts of the case.
