THE National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Monday that the death toll from the combined impact of the recent Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and tropical cyclones Mirasol, Nando, and Opong has risen to 27.
The devastating weather events have left a wide trail of destruction, affecting millions across the country.
Of the reported fatalities, the NDRRMC is still working to validate 23 cases, while only four have been officially confirmed.
The number of injured individuals remains at 33, with 14 validated and 19 still undergoing verification. The number of missing persons has climbed to 16, all of whom are also subject to validation. These figures underscore the urgent need for accurate and timely information to provide support and assistance to those affected.
The weather disturbances have impacted a staggering 906,794 families, equivalent to 3,420,391 individuals. In response, 30,265 families, comprising 106,561 persons, have sought refuge in 1,607 evacuation centers. Additionally, 22,771 families, or 84,240 persons, are receiving assistance outside of these centers.
The widespread flooding caused by the monsoon and cyclones has been reported in 370 areas, with 282 of these having already subsided. However, the aftermath continues to disrupt infrastructure, with 287 road sections and 55 bridges affected, leaving 47 roads and 13 bridges still impassable as of Monday. Power outages have also plagued 225 cities and municipalities, with 159 areas having their power supply restored thus far. Efforts are ongoing to fully restore services and provide relief to the affected communities.
