THE House of Representatives unanimously elected Ilocos Norte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” A. Marcos as Majority Leader on Monday, as it opened the first regular session of the 20th Congress with the election of key leaders and a renewed focus on legislative priorities.
Rep. Marcos is one of the youngest lawmakers to hold the powerful post, tasked with steering the House agenda, uniting the supermajority bloc, and advancing key reforms under the Bagong Pilipinas vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
Reelected Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez declared the election of Rep. Marcos upon the motion of acting floor leader, Iloilo 3rd District Rep. Lorenz Defensor.
“There is a motion to elect the Hon. Ferdinand Alexander A. Marcos as the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives. There being no objection, the Hon. Ferdinand Alexander A. Marcos is elected as Majority Leader of the House of Representatives,” Speaker Romualdez announced.
Rep. Marcos will manage floor deliberations, oversee daily House operations, and fast-track priority legislation on economic recovery, education, infrastructure, digital innovation and social equity.
His election further strengthens ties between the legislative and executive branches, with Rep. Marcos seen as a trusted partner of Speaker Romualdez.
Meanwhile, Quezon 2nd District Rep. David “Jay-jay” Suarez was chosen as Senior Deputy Speaker, taking on the key role of assisting the Speaker in presiding over sessions and guiding legislative priorities.
The House also elected the following representatives as Deputy Speakers: Janette Garin (Iloilo, 1st District), Yasser Alonto Balindong (Lanao del Sur, 2nd District), Paolo Ortega V (La Union, 1st District), Jay Khonghun (Zambales, 1st District), Kristine Singson-Meehan (Ilocos Sur, 2nd District), Ronaldo Puno (Antipolo City, 1st District), Faustino Dy III (Isabela, 6th District), Ferjenel Biron (Iloilo, 4th District), and Raymond Democrito Mendoza (TUCP party list).
The chamber also reelected Reginald Velasco as Secretary General and retired Police Maj. Gen. Napoleon Taas as Sergeant-at-Arms, ensuring continuity in House administration and security.
Since entering Congress in 2022, Rep. Marcos has earned respect for his discipline, policy depth and inclusive approach to legislation.
As senior deputy majority leader during the 19th Congress, he played a crucial role in shepherding priority measures and building consensus across party lines.
His promotion to majority leader signals the House supermajority’s confidence in his ability to deliver results and infuse new energy into institutional reforms.
