SENATOR Chiz Escudero has been chosen as the presiding officer of the Impeachment Court that will oversee the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, following a vote that resulted in 12 in favor and 8 against his appointment.
The selection marks a key step in formally organizing the court, which is tasked with ensuring that the proceedings are conducted fairly, transparently, and in accordance with the rules set under the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Escudero, a seasoned legislator and former Senate leader, will now lead the court’s deliberations and preside over all hearings during the trial.
The decision was not without opposition, however. Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano raised strong objections to the move, signaling divisions within the chamber over the choice of presiding officer. Despite his protests, Senate President Win Gatchalian proceeded to bring the matter to a formal vote, allowing all members of the Senate—acting as the Impeachment Court—to cast their votes and decide the leadership of the proceedings. The outcome reflected the majority sentiment among the senators present during the session.
With Escudero now installed in the role, the Impeachment Court moves closer to officially starting the trial, which is set to begin later this week. As presiding officer, he will be responsible for maintaining order, interpreting procedural rules, and ensuring that both the prosecution and the defense are given equal opportunity to present their arguments and evidence. His leadership will play a central role in determining how the historic proceedings unfold as the country watches the process closely.
