THE Department of Education (DepEd) announced Tuesday that Secretary Sonny Angara has directed all regional and division offices to swiftly recruit 16,000 new teachers in preparation for the opening of School Year 2025-2026 on June 16.

This initial tranche of new teaching positions, approved by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), aims to alleviate overcrowding in classrooms and reduce the workload on existing public school teachers nationwide.

The recruitment will also prioritize filling positions requiring specialized educators, particularly in kindergarten, elementary, and specific junior and senior high school subjects.

Secretary Angara emphasized the importance of timely teacher deployment for a smooth school opening. The DBM has confirmed that these 16,000 positions represent the first phase of a larger plan to create 20,000 new teaching positions this year.

DepEd has instructed schools division offices to immediately commence the publication, hiring, and appointment processes upon receiving Notices of Organization, Staffing, and Compensation Action (NOSCA) from DBM regional offices. The goal is to fill all positions by the end of the third quarter.

The DBM has already begun issuing NOSCAs for 10,000 administrative officer II (AOII) positions. DepEd noted that recruitment and applicant assessments have been underway since January, with some divisions authorized to begin hiring as early as October 2024.

The agency will actively monitor the hiring process across all regions to prevent delays. Teacher applicants for School Year 2025-2026 are advised to contact their local school division offices for further information and updates.
