ALL pending disqualification cases for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) will be resolved by next week.
This was the promise of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) as Comelec Chair George Garcia said there are currently 125 disqualification cases filed for the 2023 BSKE.
“Asahan sa darating na linggo, maglalabasan na ang mga desisyon… Mula sa dibisyon ng Comelec, umiikot na ang mga resolusyon kung saan ang 125 na na-file na disqualification cases ay ire-resolve na ng Comelec,” said Garcia.
“Bago mag-October 30, magdi-disqualify at magtatanggal ng mga pangalan sa listahan [ng mga kandidato sa BSKE],” added Garcia.
The Comelec chair also said that measures are also in place in case a resolution is not reached before election day.
“Halimbawa na kakapusin sa panahon, ang Comelec ay may kapangyarihan to suspend any proclamation… Kung ang isang kandidato ay may disqualification case at may merito ang kaso… pwedeng isuspend ang proclamation,” he xplained.
He also assured the public that there won’t be a “vaccum of leadership” in case a winning barangay chairman is disqualified.
“Kung kapitan ang na-disqualify, ang number 1 kagawad ang magiging acting barangay chairman,” said Garcia.
So far, 12 candidates for the BSKE have already been disqualified, according to Comelec. These are candidates who have previous criminal cases that make them ineligible to run for local posts.
