THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday is suspending all activities and proceedings related to the Charter change bid.
In a news conference, Comelec Chair George Garcia said the full court commission’s members were unanimous in voting to suspend Comelec Resolution 10650, which covers the guidelines for people’s initiative.
“Base po sa aming initial assessment, kinakailangan naming i-review, i-enhance (ang proseso) at dagdagan yung existing IRR o implementing rules and regulations that concern the people’s initiative. Sa ating palagay, may mga bagay doon na kulang at wala doon sa guidelines,” he said.
Covered by the suspension are all processes, including the acceptance of signature sheets by the local Comelec offices, according to the poll body chair.
Garcia said the move was intended to preempt future problems and misunderstanding in the interpretation of the prohibitions of the Comelec rules.
Earlier, Comelec said its local offices had received signed petition sheets from the proponents of the people’s initiative led by the People’s Initiative for Reform Modernization and Action.
