SENATE President Francis “Chiz” Escudero firmly rejected accusations that his actions, or lack thereof, regarding Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial are motivated by fear. In an ambush interview on Tuesday, Escudero dismissed the claims as “bait questions,” emphasizing his commitment to fulfilling his duties according to the law.
He responded directly to Akbayan party-list Representative Perci Cendaña, who earlier questioned whether Escudero’s alleged fear of Duterte was responsible for any delays in convening the Senate as an impeachment court.
Cendaña had emphasized the Senate’s constitutional obligation to act swiftly and impartially in such matters, regardless of political considerations. Escudero countered that he remains focused on adhering to legal procedures and will not be swayed by political pressures or personal opinions, irrespective of who is involved.
Escudero further clarified that such commentary clearly originates from those opposed to Vice President Duterte and in favor of the impeachment proceedings.
He stated that he remains unconcerned by opinions from either side of the issue, reiterating his commitment to impartiality and adherence to legal processes.
He emphasized that the Senate’s actions will be guided solely by the law and what he believes to be the correct course of action. The Senate President’s response aims to quell concerns about potential political influence on the impeachment process, asserting his commitment to upholding the Senate’s constitutional responsibilities in a fair and unbiased manner.
