Bersamin announces Torre as next PNP chief succeeding Marbil

Metrosundaily May 29, 2025

EXECUTIVE Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced today that Police Major General Nicolas Torre III will be the next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), succeeding Police General Rommel Marbil whose extended term expires on June 7.

The announcement ends weeks of speculation surrounding Marbil’s successor and confirms the appointment of Torre, a high-ranking officer with a long and distinguished career within the PNP.

No further details regarding Torre’s appointment were immediately released, but the announcement is expected to be formally confirmed in the coming days. The transition of leadership is anticipated to be smooth, ensuring the continued stability and effectiveness of the national police force.

Marbil’s term was extended by four months in February by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., a decision made amid the election season to maintain continuity within the PNP.

The extension pushed Marbil’s retirement beyond the mandatory age of 56.

This decision, while controversial for some, was justified by the administration as necessary to ensure stability during a crucial period.

With the elections now concluded, the appointment of Torre marks a return to the established retirement age policy for PNP chiefs. The choice of Torre suggests a commitment to maintaining a balance of experience and fresh perspectives at the helm of the national police force.

Torre’s appointment is expected to be met with a mix of reactions.

While some may welcome the appointment of a seasoned officer, others may call for greater transparency in the selection process.

The coming days will likely see further discussion and analysis of Torre’s qualifications and the implications of his appointment for the future direction of the PNP. His focus and priorities as the new chief will be closely watched by the public and stakeholders alike, particularly concerning ongoing issues such as crime prevention, internal reforms, and community policing.
