BAGUIO City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has resigned from his position as special adviser to the Independent Commission on Infrastructure (ICI), citing concerns that the Palace’s actions have undermined the commission’s mandate and his role within it.
The ICI was recently formed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to investigate alleged corruption worth billions of pesos in flood control projects and other infrastructure.
Magalong’s resignation, effective immediately, was announced on Friday., with GMA Integrated News’ Joseph Morong posting the mayor’s resignation letter on X (formerly Twitter).
The decision follows Malacañang’s announcement that it would have its legal team study the propriety of Magalong’s appointment, raising potential conflict of interest concerns.
Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro stated that President Marcos wanted to avoid any conflict of interest and noted that Magalong appeared to be stretched thin between his duties in Baguio City and his advisory role in the ICI.
However, Magalong’s resignation letter reveals a deeper concern. He stated that “The Palace’s pronouncements concerning my designation, which run contrary to the terms of my appointment, have undermined the role and mandate entrusted to me.”
He further explained that “Combined with circumstances that already cast doubt on the independence of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure, it has become clear that my continued service is no longer tenable.”
Magalong emphasized his commitment to the people of Baguio, stating, “Let it also be stated that I have not neglected, nor will I ever neglect, my primary responsibility to the people of Baguio, whose welfare and interests remain at the core of my public service.”
