SENATE President Francis “Chiz” G. Escudero has called for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to remain non-partisan, urging Vice President Sara Duterte to stop courting the military to align itself with their side.
Speaking on Monday, March 24, 2025, Escudero emphasized the importance of the AFP’s neutrality, stating that they should “stand behind the chain of command and the Constitution under the commander in chief.” He underscored that the military’s role is not to engage in political maneuvering or favor any particular side.
“The AFP should not take sides with anyone,” Escudero asserted. “It is not for them to play politics and favor one side or the other.” He expressed concern that both sides of the political spectrum are actively courting the military, a practice he believes is detrimental to the AFP’s neutrality and undermines its role as a professional force.
“I hope both sides will also stop courting our armed forces because we do not want them to intervene every time there is a disagreement among politicians in our country,” Escudero added. “It is not their job to be referees in any political issues in our country.”
Escudero’s statement comes amidst growing concerns about the potential for the AFP to be drawn into political disputes. His call for the military to remain non-partisan echoes the sentiments of many who believe that the AFP should focus on its primary mission of defending the nation and upholding the Constitution, not engaging in partisan politics.
