THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has activated its contingency plan for a potential non-combatant evacuation operation (NEO) of Filipinos in the Middle East, according to AFP Chief General Romeo Brawner Jr.
This announcement follows the death of a Filipina caregiver in Israel due to injuries sustained during an Iranian missile attack, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region.
General Brawner confirmed that the AFP is prepared to deploy its C-130 aircraft and naval vessels if necessary to facilitate the safe return of Filipino citizens.
The AFP’s readiness for a potential NEO stems from its experience in conducting similar operations during previous crises in the Middle East.
General Brawner noted that the AFP has a long history of successfully evacuating Filipinos from volatile regions, citing instances in the past decade where naval assets were deployed to bring home citizens seeking refuge. In light of the recent events, General Brawner has instructed AFP personnel to review and update their NEO plans, ensuring the readiness of all necessary platforms and personnel.
The AFP’s proactive approach underscores the Philippine government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad, particularly in areas experiencing heightened conflict.
The recent death of the Filipina caregiver serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in unstable regions.
The AFP’s preparedness for a potential large-scale evacuation demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Filipinos in the event of further escalation in the Middle East. The government’s coordinated efforts, involving the AFP and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), aim to provide timely and effective assistance to OFWs in need.
