PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has arrived in New Delhi, India to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, representing the Philippines in his capacity as Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and as an invited outreach country.
The President’s participation underscores the country’s growing engagement with major emerging economies and its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation across key global forums. He was formally welcomed upon arrival by Anupriya Patel, India’s Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers.
Aside from the summit proceedings, President Marcos is scheduled to hold high‑level bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Discussions are expected to center on defense and maritime cooperation, reflecting shared interests in regional security and freedom of navigation, alongside expanding trade and investment ties between the two nations. The agenda highlights the strategic importance of the Philippines–India partnership, particularly as both countries navigate evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indo‑Pacific region.
As ASEAN Chair, President Marcos will also have the opportunity to highlight regional priorities, advocate for inclusive economic cooperation, and explore avenues for BRICS engagement with Southeast Asian nations. His participation in the summit signals the Philippines’ intent to broaden its international partnerships beyond traditional alliances, fostering greater economic connectivity and diplomatic dialogue with major economies across the globe.
