A SPORTS utility vehicle (SUV) crashed into the center island, flipped over, and hit a barrier on the northbound section of the Skyway.
The driver of the vehicle died in the incident.
According to Jun Veneracion’s report on GMA News “24 Oras” on Monday, the vehicle caught fire, trapping the driver who was unable to escape.
“We can see the position of the [occupant] lying in the back passenger seat,” said Police Lieutenant Nadame Malang, Spokesperson for the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG).
“The person is beyond recognition, even their gender cannot be determined,” Malang added.
Based on information gathered by the HPG, the vehicle was reportedly traveling at a high speed before the accident.
Human error and mechanical failure are two possible causes that authorities will investigate.
The HPG has requested CCTV footage from Skyway management to assist in the investigation. GMA Integrated News is also seeking a statement from the management.
“Based on information obtained from Skyway security and a bystander witness, the driver was speeding. We will continue our investigation to determine the vehicle’s speed,” said Malang, adding that they have requested a copy of the CCTV footage from Skyway.
