THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has ordered a 30‑day suspension of operations for a jeepney after a video showing a passenger being thrown from the vehicle went viral online.
The incident, which was linked to alleged reckless driving, prompted immediate action from the transport regulator, which announced the sanction on Friday. The move aims to hold the operator accountable and ensure the safety of commuters across all public transport routes.
Aside from the suspension, the agency also issued a formal show cause order against the operator of the unit with license plate APA‑4905. The document directs the operator to submit a written explanation within the prescribed period, stating why the vehicle’s Certificate of Public Convenience or authority to operate should not face further penalties, including permanent suspension or full revocation. This gives the operator the chance to present its side before the board decides on more severe sanctions.
According to the LTFRB, the violations cited include the failure to provide safe, reliable, and convenient public transport service, as well as the employment of a driver who operated the vehicle in a reckless manner. These breaches fall under existing regulations designed to protect passengers and maintain order on the roads. The agency emphasized that such incidents will not be tolerated, especially as public safety remains its top priority.
As part of the requirements in the show cause order, the operator is also instructed to surrender the jeepney’s license plate to authorities. The driver involved will be required to undergo a mandatory drug test and attend a road safety seminar, while the vehicle itself will be subjected to a thorough inspection to verify its roadworthiness. The results of these steps will be considered alongside the operator’s response to determine if additional penalties will be imposed.
