PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has tapped former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Nicolas Torre III to lead the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) as its new general manager.
The appointment, confirmed by Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro, signals a significant shift in leadership for the agency responsible for overseeing Metro Manila’s complex urban challenges.
Torre’s extensive background in law enforcement and public safety is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the MMDA’s operations.
Torre’s experience as the former PNP chief positions him to tackle some of Metro Manila’s most pressing issues, including traffic management, waste disposal, and disaster preparedness.
His familiarity with security protocols and logistical coordination could prove invaluable in streamlining the MMDA’s response to emergencies and improving overall public safety within the metropolis. The appointment reflects President Marcos’s commitment to addressing the persistent problems that affect the daily lives of millions of Metro Manila residents.
The move has been met with mixed reactions, with some expressing optimism about Torre’s ability to bring order and efficiency to the MMDA, while others raise concerns about the potential militarization of a civilian agency. Regardless, all eyes will be on Torre as he assumes his new role and begins to implement strategies to alleviate Metro Manila’s urban woes.
