ON Friday night, Alice Guo, the dismissed mayor of Bamban, Tarlac, was transferred from the Pasig City Jail to the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) confirmed, in accordance with a Pasig City court ruling.
Guo’s legal team had previously filed a motion requesting that she remain at the Pasig City Jail Female Dormitory, but the court, which found her guilty of qualified human trafficking, ultimately ruled that she be detained at the Mandaluyong facility. This decision underscores the court’s adherence to standard procedures for individuals convicted of serious crimes.
The conviction stems from Guo’s involvement in the raid on a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) hub in Bamban in June 2024. The raid resulted in the rescue of over 800 individuals, both Filipinos and foreigners, highlighting the severity of the human trafficking operation.
The transfer to the CIW marks a significant step in the legal process following Guo’s conviction. The CIW is a national penitentiary for women, and Guo will now be subject to the institution’s rules and regulations as she awaits further legal proceedings or sentencing.
