MANILA is facing a significant garbage crisis, with unpaid debts totaling nearly ₱950 million hindering waste management efforts, according to Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso.
On his first day back in office, Domagoso encountered this pressing issue, prompting him to declare a state of public health emergency.
He immediately directed barangay officials to launch immediate cleanup operations across the city, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
The mayor’s appeal for a unified effort transcends political affiliations, focusing on the health and safety of Manila residents. He urged residents to actively participate in cleaning streets, creeks, and canals.
The significant financial burden associated with the unpaid debts underscores the magnitude of the challenge. The declaration of a public health emergency is anticipated to facilitate the allocation of necessary resources and expedite the implementation of comprehensive solutions to address the long-standing garbage problem plaguing the nation’s capital.
