PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has yet to reveal who will succeed outgoing Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos, who is set to run for senator in next year’s midterm elections.
Marcos, while acknowledging that there are two potential candidates on his shortlist, emphasized his respect for Abalos, stating, “I don’t want him to feel that we are pushing him away.” He indicated that the announcement of Abalos’s replacement will be made once the outgoing secretary formally files his candidacy.
“Since considering — especially that he has done such a good job as DILG. So, when he will file, we will also announce his replacement,” Marcos said.
Abalos, who is part of the administration’s senatorial slate under the Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas, confirmed his resignation plans, stating, “Yes, I have to resign… perhaps I will resign on the day after filing.” He also acknowledged that he has heard of several potential replacements, but declined to name names, stating that the final decision rests with the President.
The President’s silence on Abalos’s successor has sparked speculation about potential candidates.
While Marcos has yet to reveal his choice, the announcement is expected soon, as Abalos is poised to file his candidacy in the coming weeks.
