On National Heroes’ Day, the country gets a new, authentic heroine
PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. congratulated tennis star Alex Eala on her latest breakthrough achievement at the US Open in New York City, hailing her as a source of national pride for making history in the sport.
In a post on his official Facebook account, President Marcos assured Eala that the entire country stands behind her in every competition.
Eala etched her name in history as the first Filipino to win a match at a Grand Slam singles tournament in the Open era, rallying for a stunning 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11) upset over 14th seed Clara Tauson of Denmark at the first round of the US Open.
The 20-year old Eala, who battled back from a 1-5 deficit in the deciding third set, will move on to the second round of a Grand Slam singles tournament for the first time.
Eala’s historic moment in New York dates back to 2022 when she won the US Open Girls Championship, making her the first Filipino player to win a junior Grand Slam singles title.
