A ROUTINE Maritime Domain Awareness flight by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) near Bajo de Masinloc Shoal was met with aggressive interference from Chinese forces, including a low-altitude pass by a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy helicopter and the approach of a Shenyang J-16 fighter jet. The incident occurred as the PCG discovered a second yellow buoy at the northern tip of the shoal, adding to concerns about ongoing activities in the area.
The PLA Navy helicopter’s low-altitude pass and the Shenyang J-16 fighter jet’s approach were perceived as deliberate attempts to intimidate and obstruct the PCG’s operations. These actions highlight the continued tensions in the West Philippine Sea and the challenges faced by the Philippines in asserting its maritime rights in the face of China’s growing assertiveness.
Despite the aggressive interference, the PCG reaffirmed its commitment to upholding international law and protecting the country’s maritime jurisdiction. The PCG’s determination to continue its patrols and monitoring activities in the area underscores its resolve to safeguard the Philippines’ sovereign rights and ensure the safety of navigation for all vessels in the region, despite the risks posed by Chinese actions.
