Rep. Co to youth, public: Take active part in VP Sara impeachment trial

admin May 25, 2026

HOUSE trial spokesperson and Assistant Minority Leader Renee Co of Kabataan Party-list on Sunday late afternoon urged young Filipinos and the broader public to actively participate in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Z. Duterte by following the evidence, engaging in discussions, and helping ensure a fair and principled process.

In an interview with Todo Balita sa Hapon hosted by Geli Mendez over dwIZ, Co said, “Nasa sa taumbayan po ang sagot kung kaya nilang magkapag-exert ng political pressure para maging fair, patas ‘yung paglilitis.”

The youth lawmaker emphasized that public vigilance is crucial as the Senate sits as an impeachment court.

She said participation in the process should be viewed not as a partisan exercise, but as a civic responsibility, especially in a case involving public trust, accountability, and national leadership.

Co issued the appeal as the House prosecution panel continues preparations for the impeachment trial.

Duterte is facing articles of impeachment accusing her of alleged culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, betrayal of public trust, bribery, and other high crimes.

The Kabataan lawmaker said the public should not remain passive observers while the impeachment court evaluates the case.

“Sa mga Pilipino na nakikinig, pwede tayong hindi lang tagapagmasid pero active participants sa pag-voice out sa social media or even on ground ng saloobin natin,” Co said.

She said public engagement—whether through online discussions, community conversations, or closely monitoring the proceedings—plays an important role in promoting accountability and democratic participation.

Co also stressed that the Senate impeachment court’s decision must ultimately be anchored on evidence and principle.

“Dapat po ebidensya. Hindi loyalty to one personality, hindi dapat 2028 prospects, pero ebidensya at syempre prinsipyo,” she said.

Co urged both senators and citizens to carefully study and engage with the evidence presented during the proceedings.

“…Panawagan po ito sa lahat ng senators, panawagan po ito sa lahat ng mamamayan: basahin natin, i-engage natin ang ebidensya at gamitin natin ito sa pagmamatyag mismo kung anong dapat tatahakin nating landas para ma-ensure na accountability is always present,” Co said.
