BPI discloses alleged 7 active, 34 closed accounts linked to VP Sara, husband

Metrosundaily October 7, 2026

BANK of the Philippine Islands (BPI) records showed seven alleged active deposit accounts and 34 closed individual accounts under Vice President Sara Z. Duterte and her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio, a BPI executive who testified before the Senate Impeachment Court on Wednesday.

Marwin L. Galvez, division head for BPI’s Central Metro Manila branches, authenticated the records during his testimony for the prosecution. Galvez oversees the daily operations of 111 branches and has worked for BPI for 25 years.

“All in all, we have seven active deposit accounts under the name of the respondent and her spouse,” Galvez said.

Asked about other accounts located by the bank, he replied, “We have 34 other closed individual accounts.”

BPI conducted the search for records covering January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2025. The bank also located two active credit card accounts and one active corporate account connected to the persons covered by the court’s subpoenas.

The records included individual, joint and in-trust-for accounts bearing the names of Duterte, Carpio and members of the Duterte family.

Among the accounts Galvez confirmed were an individual Greenhills account under Sara Zimmerman Duterte; a joint Greenhills account under Carpio and Duterte; and an account at BPI’s Julia Vargas branch bearing the names of former president Rodrigo Duterte and the vice president.

BPI also confirmed an account at its Davao Main branch under Rodrigo Duterte in trust for Sara Duterte.

Prosecutor Atty. James Bryan Ibrahim Alih added three subjects to the prosecution’s offer of Galvez’s testimony: more than ₱90 million in transactions involving BPI accounts and the respondent; ₱80 million used to purchase insurance products; and the joint BPI accounts of the vice president and her father.

“We will adopt the same offer. However, may I just add two more,” Alih told the court.

He said the prosecution would use Galvez’s testimony to establish “a transaction involving more than ₱90 million involving the accounts in BPI and involving the respondent” and “another ₱80 million of purchases in insurance products.”

The prosecution later presented four letters of instruction dated March 28, 2014. Each authorized BPI is to debit ₱20 million from the Julia Vargas account and transfer it to the settlement account of BPI-Philam Life Assurance Corporation.

The four instructions covered different policy numbers and transferred a combined ₱80 million. The documents described the products as “peso plans.”

Galvez also authenticated records tracing a separate ₱40.65-million time deposit opened at BPI Julia Vargas in January 2010. The time deposit bore the names of Rodrigo and Sara Duterte and was rolled over 12 times before growing to more than ₱41.7 million.

The proceeds were eventually credited to the joint Julia Vargas account and used to purchase a manager’s check. Records showed the same amount moving through a series of unused and reissued manager’s checks from 2011 to 2013.

The impeachment court admitted the older records subject to a stated limitation. Presiding Officer Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero said the court was not treating the 2011 transaction as a separate impeachable act.

“It is to establish pattern and, if at all, baseline,” Escudero said.

The prosecution is continuing its presentation of bank witnesses to authenticate the accounts, balances, deposits, withdrawals, manager’s checks and insurance transactions involving Duterte, Carpio and companies linked to them.
