THE International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed the appointment of British-Israeli lawyer Nicholas Kaufman as legal counsel for former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
According to a court filing in the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I dated March 18 (Central European Standard Time), the ICC Registry informed the court that Duterte himself appointed Kaufman as his lead legal counsel.
The Registry informed Pre-Trial Chamber I that Duterte had requested in writing that Nicholas Kaufman be his lawyer in the hearings before the International Criminal Court.
According to the ICC, the Registry received a signed letter from Duterte nominating Kaufman as his lead defense counsel.
The Registry met with Duterte on March 17 to sign the appointment of Kaufman.
The following day, Kaufman accepted the mandate as required by Article 11 of the Code of Conduct for Counsel.
