DFA Clarifies: 20 Pinoys arrested in Qatar, 1 released for political demonstration

admin March 30, 2025

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) issued a correction on Sunday, stating that 20 Filipinos were arrested in Qatar for participating in an unauthorized political demonstration, revising the earlier reported figure of 17.

Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB, clarified the number based on information received from the Philippine Embassy in Doha. He added that one of the arrested Filipinos has since been released.

The embassy has been granted access to the remaining 19 detainees and is actively working to secure their release.

Undersecretary de Vega emphasized that if charges are filed, the embassy will provide legal assistance to the arrested individuals, who could face imprisonment for up to three years under Qatari law.

The arrests stemmed from a demonstration believed to be in protest of the detention of former President Rodrigo Duterte in The Hague, Netherlands, where he is facing charges of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court.

The initial report of 17 arrests was based on preliminary information. The DFA’s updated figure reflects ongoing communication with the embassy in Doha, providing a more accurate account of the situation.

The embassy continues to monitor the situation closely and is committed to ensuring the well-being and legal representation of all arrested Filipinos. The DFA’s efforts underscore the importance of consular assistance in protecting the rights and interests of Filipino citizens abroad.

The Philippine Embassy in Qatar has reiterated its strong advice to all Filipinos residing in the country to adhere to local laws and regulations concerning public gatherings and political expression.

Political rallies of any kind are strictly prohibited in Qatar, and participation in such events carries significant legal risks. The embassy urges Filipinos to exercise caution and prioritize their safety and compliance with Qatari laws.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by Filipinos working abroad, particularly concerning their involvement in political activities outside of the Philippines.

The DFA’s proactive response and commitment to providing consular assistance demonstrate its dedication to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Filipino citizens worldwide. The situation remains under close observation, with the DFA working diligently to resolve the matter and secure the release of the remaining detainees.

The DFA’s clarification underscores the importance of accurate and timely information dissemination in situations involving overseas Filipinos.

The embassy’s ongoing efforts to secure the release of the detainees and provide legal support reflect the Philippine government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and ensuring their well-being. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for Filipinos overseas to be mindful of local laws and regulations to avoid potential legal repercussions.
