New York—A Filipino father, Mark Carlo Arceta, 40, was tragically killed in Chicago after his SUV was struck by a speeding getaway car driven by thieves fleeing a smash-and-grab burglary.
The incident occurred early morning on September 11 in downtown Chicago, as Arceta was on his way to work. According to the Chicago Police Department, the suspects were fleeing the scene of a burglary at a luxury fashion store on Michigan Avenue, where they stole merchandise valued at up to $1 million.
The impact of the collision crushed Arceta’s vehicle, as the suspects were reportedly traveling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.
Arceta was rushed to Northwestern Hospital but succumbed to severe injuries.
Adding to the tragedy, Arceta’s wife, Roanne Masangcay, gave birth to their second child just a day after his death. Masangcay, who described her husband as a loving father and partner, had filed for paternity leave on his behalf, making the day of the crash his last scheduled day of work.
The suspects, who have extensive criminal records, face multiple felony charges, including murder, burglary, and retail theft. A fundraising effort has been launched to assist the Arceta family with funeral expenses and ongoing support.
