Mactan-Cebu Int’l Airport: World’s friendliest resort airport

admin January 21, 2022

The Mactant Cebu International Airport is now the second largest airport and one of the busiest airports in the country.

BEFORE the current Department of Transportation (DOTr) took over in 2016, the construction works for the new Passenger Terminal Building of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) was delayed for 11 months.

To push for the realization of the much-awaited project, Secretary Art Tugade ordered the immediate formulation of an efficient catch up plan, in a bid to complete the project on schedule in June 2018.

Now, following the swift and seamless completion of the project, the MCIA is hailed as the “world’s friendliest resort airport,” which won various international awards because of its sophisticated structure and architecture.

Moreover, the MCIA is now the second largest airport and one of the busiest airports in the country.

The realization of the project also paved the way for a remarkable reduction on the airport’s congestion, while doubling the airport’s pre-pandemic passenger capacity, from 4.5 million passengers per year to a whopping 8.5 million.

In addition, last 14 January 2020, a groundbreaking for the airport’s new parallel taxi/secondary runway was held, while the airport is set to house the country’s first two (2) parallel runways this year.

In May 2021, the DOTr also inaugurated the new taxiway of MCIA, which aims to increase passenger traffic and aircraft movement in the General Aviation area of the MCIA and likewise accommodate wide-body aircraft in preparation for future expansions.

The DOTr also inaugurated the new Administration Building of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority’s (MCIAA) Corporate Building, enabling concerned personnel to extend efficient service and further provide comfort to its stakeholders.

The realization of the project manifests the utmost commitment and determination of Secretary Art Tugade, the DOTr, MCIAA, CAAP, and the GMR-Megawide Cebu International Airport Corporation (GMCAC), to help the country’s aviation sector reach greater heights.
