Jayboy Magdadaro, a humble 15-year-old, risked his own life to rescue over 50 people, demonstrating extraordinary courage and compassion that has now been recognized with a full scholarship.
Jayboy, a resident of Barangay Jubay, spent an entire day tirelessly navigating the treacherous, chest-deep floodwaters that engulfed his community. Using only a small boat, he fearlessly ventured into the storm’s fury to reach trapped residents, his determination fueled by the cries for help that pierced through the howling winds.
“Kahit malakas ang tubig, pinilit kong tumulong kasi naririnig ko ang sigaw ng tao,” Jayboy recounted in an interview, his voice filled with the quiet resolve that belies his young age. (Even though the water was strong, I tried my best to help because I could hear people shouting.)

This covers all of Jayboy’s school fees and includes a ₱3,000 monthly allowance, giving him the opportunity to pursue any course of his choice without financial burden.
Atty. Arguedo lauded Jayboy for his “heroism beyond his years,” emphasizing that his quick thinking and selflessness during the disaster serve as an inspiration to all young people. Jayboy’s actions are a shining example of the resilience and compassion that can be found even in the most challenging of circumstances.
Interestingly, Jayboy credits his passion for skimboarding with helping him develop the skills he needed to maneuver through the strong currents. This hobby, born out of a love for the ocean, unexpectedly became a life-saving asset during the typhoon.
