MANILA – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced Tuesday that the reconstruction of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) is set to begin on June 13.
MMDA Chair Romando Artes, speaking at the Balintawak Station of the EDSA Busway in Quezon City, stated that the project is part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s “Build, Better, More” initiative.
A comprehensive information campaign will be launched to inform the public about schedules, plans, rerouting schemes, and other measures to mitigate traffic disruptions.
Artes indicated that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) estimates the project will take approximately two years to complete.
The EDSA rebuild, initially announced by Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon during an inspection of EDSA Busway station elevators, is scheduled to commence in mid-June.
“It’s a total rebuild; we’re going to change EDSA,” Dizon said. “It will be difficult while it’s being done; there will be traffic, and there will be inconvenience. But when it’s finished, it will be a huge relief for our countrymen.”
To alleviate the expected traffic congestion on the major thoroughfare, Dizon added that the DOTr, as chair of the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB), aims to open sections of the Skyway to help ease traffic flow during the construction period.
