JUSTICE Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct an investigation into an “audio deepfake” of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. supposedly ordering the military to take action in case China attacks the Philippines.
This comes as the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) sounded the alarm over the existence of the recording, which was allegedly manipulated through artificial intelligence (AI).
“Hold accountable the personalities behind this deceiving act, make the investigation swift and comprehensive to ascertain the truth,”said Remulla to the NBI.
“I am instructing you to file the necessary legal action, if warranted, against those behind this fake news,” Remulla added.
PCO clarified that Mr. Marcos has no such audio recording.
“We ask everyone to be proactive in exposing and fighting against misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. Let us remain and be more mindful and responsible of the content we choose to share in our shared digital spaces,” said the PCO.
A deepfake is a form of digital manipulation in which a person’s features, such as face or voice, are replaced with someone else’s using AI.
