REPRESENTATIVE Leila de Lima of the Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Partylist issued a statement on August 6, 2025, addressing recent public remarks made by former senator Antonio Trillanes IV regarding former Vice President Leni Robredo.
De Lima expressed concern that Trillanes’ accusations, which she described as based on conjecture, could damage not only individual reputations but also the broader opposition movement.
While acknowledging her respect for Trillanes, she emphasized that such public criticisms, particularly those targeting allies, could create division and weaken their collective efforts. De Lima refuted Trillanes’ suggestion that Robredo would have hindered an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, citing Robredo’s strong public stance on accountability and justice.
De Lima recalled shared experiences with Robredo, highlighting Robredo’s vocal support for accountability and her empathy for those unjustly persecuted, including De Lima herself.
She emphasized that Robredo’s public record demonstrates a clear commitment to justice and human rights, contradicting Trillanes’ claims.
De Lima urged a focus on shared goals rather than internal conflict, calling for unity within the opposition to effectively challenge those responsible for past injustices. She concluded by stressing that the opposition’s true fight is for the Filipino people, for justice, truth, and dignity, and that internal divisions only serve to benefit their adversaries.
