THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) has initiated a preliminary investigation into former Taguig City Mayor Lino Cayetano for potential material misrepresentation.
This action follows the Comelec First Division’s dismissal of a petition to disqualify Cayetano from the recent midterm elections as “moot and academic” due to his unsuccessful bid for the Taguig first district congressional seat.
While dismissing the disqualification petition, the June 18th decision referred the case to the Comelec Law Department for a preliminary investigation into possible violations of election laws.
The investigation stems from an October 2024 opposition filed by Allen Noromor challenging Cayetano and his wife, Fille’s residency.
In March 2025, the Taguig City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 153 ordered the removal of the Cayetanos’ names from the voter’s list in Barangay Usuan due to insufficient proof of residency and a late filing of their inclusion petition.
This followed the earlier disapproval of their voter registration transfer application. Cayetano lost the congressional race to Ading Cruz, receiving 79,064 votes.
