THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is considering launching an investigation into candidates who received campaign donations from companies with existing government contracts, according to Comelec Chair George Garcia.
This potential investigation will be initiated after the poll body has thoroughly evaluated the submitted Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCEs) from candidates in previous elections. The move signals a heightened scrutiny of campaign finance practices and a commitment to ensuring compliance with election laws.
The Comelec’s consideration of an investigation follows Senate President Chiz Escudero’s recent admission that he received ₱30 million during his 2022 campaign from Lawrence Lubiano, president of Centerways Construction and Development Inc.
Centerways Construction is reportedly among the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) top 15 favored contractors, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the influence of government contractors on political campaigns.
The Comelec’s potential investigation aims to determine whether any violations of election laws occurred and to ensure transparency and accountability in campaign finance.
