THE Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested six individuals, including three Chinese nationals, for allegedly selling substandard cellphones and tablets in Manila’s Binondo district.
The operation, conducted on July 5th along Alvaro Street, resulted in the seizure of 37 iPhone units and 263 iPad units, with an estimated total value of ₱3.5 million.
CIDG Acting Director BGen. Romeo Macapaz revealed that the suspects were apprehended by the CIDG Anti-Organized Crime Unit (AOCU) in coordination with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
The confiscated gadgets were being sold at significantly lower prices than their original retail value but lacked the necessary clearances from both the NTC and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
“The items were on display in their warehouse, readily available for sale,” Macapaz stated. “We suspect there may be more such operations in the area.”
Macapaz emphasized that the operation was part of a broader police campaign aimed at protecting consumers from the risks associated with substandard and counterfeit electronics.
He highlighted the potential health and safety hazards posed by these products, as well as violations of intellectual property and trade regulations. The suspects are currently facing charges related to the sale of substandard goods and violations of intellectual property rights.
