Meralco announces 72-centavo increase in electricity rates for April

admin April 12, 2025

MERALCO customers will face a significant increase in their electricity bills this April, with the power distributor announcing a 72-centavo hike per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This adjustment brings the overall rate to P13.0127 per kWh, up from P12.2901 per kWh in March.

The increase translates to an additional P145 for residential customers consuming 200 kWh. Meralco attributes the price jump primarily to a surge in generation charges, which rose by P0.7278 per kWh.

This substantial increase in generation charges is largely due to the volatility in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

WESM prices skyrocketed by P3.4205 per kWh, a direct consequence of tighter supply conditions within the Luzon grid. During the March supply period, the average capacity unavailable in the grid reached a significant 979 megawatts, coinciding with a rise in overall electricity demand.

The higher electricity costs will undoubtedly impact household budgets across Metro Manila and surrounding areas. Meralco’s announcement serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges related to electricity supply and demand in the Philippines.

The company has not yet commented on potential long-term solutions to address these fluctuating prices. Consumers are advised to budget accordingly and explore energy-saving measures to mitigate the impact of this price increase.
