LEYTE Representative Martin Romualdez was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives without any opposition on Monday, the first day of the 19th Congress.
Romualdez, cousin of President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr was voted by 282 solons out of 309 House members while four abstained and 22 did not vote.
Romualdez, who served as House majority leader during the 18th Congress, was nominated by his nephew, Ilocos Norte Representative Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos, the President’s son.
“Representative Romualdez’s competence is far beyond dispute. Much has been said of his familial relations to the President, but the reasons I cited ascertain that his qualification is beyond sufficient to lead us to greater heights,” Rep. Marcos said.
Batangas Representative Ralph Recto, who also nominated Romualdez, agreed, saying Romualdez is rich in experience inside and outside the government.
