THE Department of Education (DepEd) expressed deep concern over the tragic shooting incident that unfolded on Tuesday morning, August 18, at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School campus, which claimed the lives of two individuals.
The agency said it is “gravely concerned” by the violence that occurred within a school setting, emphasizing that campuses should remain safe havens for learning and free from harm. The incident has sent shockwaves across the education sector, prompting urgent calls to review and strengthen security protocols in educational institutions nationwide.
DepEd assured the public that it stands ready to extend full support and assistance to all those affected by the tragedy. The department is coordinating closely with mental health partners and service providers to deploy psychological first aid and comprehensive psychosocial support. Counseling and intervention services will be made available to students, teachers, school personnel, and families who have been traumatized by the event, to help them cope and recover in the days and weeks ahead.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, including how the alleged gunman was able to bring firearms onto school premises. DepEd noted that it will also work with the school and local government to ensure that appropriate safety measures are reviewed and reinforced. The agency reiterated its commitment to the welfare of learners and educators, affirming that every effort will be made to prevent similar incidents and uphold the sanctity and security of the school environment.
