PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed on Monday the country’s unwavering commitment to defending its sovereign rights and claims in the West Philippine Sea, anchored firmly on the historic 2016 arbitral ruling.
Speaking during his fifth State of the Nation Address, the President emphasized that the Philippines will never back down from asserting what legally belongs to it, declaring that Filipinos do not yield to pressure or intimidation from any quarter.
Marcos underscored that the 2016 decision by the Permanent Court of Arbitration remains a binding and definitive victory for the Philippines, having invalidated expansive and overlapping claims that violate international law.
He stressed that the country will continue to pursue peaceful diplomatic channels to resolve disputes, but will also ensure that its maritime territories, resources, and fishermen are fully protected at all times. This stance reflects the administration’s balanced approach—upholding the rule of law while remaining open to dialogue.
