THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has confirmed it is conducting an investigation into an incident involving Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro during President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s official trip to Vancouver, Canada, last week.
The move aims to clarify what transpired during the visit, which formed part of the president’s engagements abroad to strengthen bilateral relations and promote Philippine interests.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro has formally instructed the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa and the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver to take the lead in gathering details. Both posts are tasked with coordinating closely with local Canadian authorities to fully establish the circumstances surrounding the event.
This includes reviewing the sequence of events, identifying the parties involved, and verifying all relevant facts to ensure a complete and accurate account.
Additionally, the DFA team will assess the applicable laws, regulations, and security protocols governing the protection and conduct of visiting foreign dignitaries and their official delegations.
The findings will help determine if proper procedures were followed and if adjustments are needed to prevent similar incidents in future foreign trips. The department assured the public that the review will be thorough, transparent, and conducted in accordance with diplomatic norms and international standards.
