Remulla: Plunder charges vs Marcoleta to proceed despite INC rallies

Metrosundaily July 1, 2026

OMBUDSMAN Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla firmly stated on Wednesday that “nothing has changed” regarding his office’s plan to file plunder charges against Senator Rodante Marcoleta within the week.

He made this clear during an ambush interview in Pasay City, as he was asked whether the ongoing series of rallies organized by the Iglesia Ni Cristo in support of the senator would affect the timeline or decision of the investigation.

When pressed directly if the filing would still proceed as announced, Remulla replied unequivocally: “Nothing is changing. Nothing has changed.” While he confirmed the case will move forward, he did not specify the exact day the charges will be submitted before the Sandiganbayan. The case stems from allegations that Marcoleta failed to declare around ₱75 million in campaign contributions during the 2025 senatorial elections, which the Ombudsman has deemed sufficient basis for a plunder complaint.

Remulla also acknowledged the right of the INC and its members to freedom of expression and assembly, noting that they are free to hold rallies in support of the lawmaker. However, he rejected the group’s claim of “selective justice,” calling the accusation a “wrong premise.” He emphasized that the Office of the Ombudsman operates independently and consistently, stressing: “There is no selective justice in the country when it comes to the Ombudsman.”
