PROMINENT businessman and former Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson was taken into custody on Thursday by operatives of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD).
The arrest was made at his residence in Barangay Ugong Norte, Quezon City, pursuant to a warrant issued by Branch 21 of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Vigan City. He faces charges for violation of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, specifically for cyber libel, as confirmed by local police authorities.
Following standard procedures, Singson was brought to QCPD Police Station 12 for booking and documentation. However, he was not detained for long; shortly after his arrest, he posted the required cash bond amounting to ₱60,000. With the bail duly settled and accepted by the court, he was officially released from police custody later the same day, allowing him to await further legal proceedings while out on provisional liberty.
This development marks another legal challenge for the former official, who has long been a well‑known figure in Philippine politics and business. No further details regarding the specific statements or publications involved in the case were immediately disclosed, but the case will now proceed before the Vigan City RTC, where Singson will be required to appear for hearings and respond to the allegations filed against him under the country’s cybercrime laws.
