IN a heartbreaking display of courage and selflessness, Filipina caregiver Mary Ann Velasquez de Vera lost her life during Iran’s missile attack on Israel on February 28, after ensuring the safety of her elderly employer.
The 32-year-old overseas Filipino worker (OFW) from Basista, Pangasinan, exemplified the dedication and compassion that define countless Filipinos working abroad.
As sirens wailed across Israel, signaling the impending danger of the joint attack by Iran and the US, Mary Ann’s first instinct was to protect her patient. Without hesitation, she rushed to assist the elderly woman, guiding her to the nearest bomb shelter and ensuring her safety before seeking shelter herself. Tragically, Mary Ann was unable to reach safety in time and was fatally struck by a missile.
Mary Ann’s heroic act has drawn widespread praise and admiration, highlighting the extraordinary sacrifices made by OFWs who leave their families behind to provide care and support to others. Her unwavering commitment to her patient, even in the face of imminent danger, serves as a testament to the values of compassion, loyalty, and selflessness that are deeply ingrained in Filipino culture.
The Philippine government has expressed its deepest condolences to Mary Ann’s family and is working to provide them with the necessary assistance and support during this difficult time. Her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew her, and her story will serve as an inspiration to all who strive to make a difference in the lives of others.
