NBI director urges Roque to face trafficking charges

Metrosundaily February 23, 2026

NEWLY APPOINTED National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag has publicly called on former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque to return to the Philippines and address the serious charges leveled against him.

The appeal comes amidst reports that Roque is seeking asylum in the Netherlands, a move that has drawn criticism and raised questions about his willingness to cooperate with ongoing investigations. Matibag emphasized the importance of due process and urged Roque to confront the allegations in a Philippine court.

The charges against Roque stem from his alleged involvement with the Lucky South 99 Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) firm. He is facing accusations of qualified human trafficking, a grave offense that carries significant penalties under Philippine law. The case has attracted considerable attention, given Roque’s previous high-profile position in the government and the serious nature of the crimes he is accused of committing.

Adding to the legal pressure, Roque’s passport was canceled in November 2025, further restricting his ability to travel internationally and potentially complicating his asylum application. This action by the Philippine government signals a firm stance on ensuring accountability and preventing individuals facing serious charges from evading justice by seeking refuge abroad. The cancellation of his passport underscores the government’s commitment to pursuing the case against him.

Director Matibag’s public statement serves as a clear message to Roque and others who may be considering evading legal proceedings. The NBI is determined to pursue the case vigorously and ensure that justice is served.
